Buddy, the Bilingual Parakeet

In a footnote toward the end of the first chapter of my book (no. 86 on p. 381), I quote from an article that appeared in the Pennsylvania Dutchman newspaper on March 15, 1951. The Pennsylvania Dutch linguist, J. William Frey, reported the existence of a parakeet in Kunkletown, Monroe County, PA, named Buddy who was able to “speak” Pennsylvania Dutch and English. The original newspaper article on which Prof. Frey drew appeared in the January 28, 1951, edition of the Allentown Sunday Call-Chronicle (p. 30) and is given below.
