Nelson Zehr
Nelson Zehr was born in 1932 in Wilmot Centre, the son of William and Druscilla (Bender) Zehr. He had two sisters. Deitsch was Nelson’s first language. When he was three years of age, Nelson’s father died of pneumonia and his mother and siblings moved to the 16th Line of East Zorra Township where they lived with Nelson’s paternal grandparents. Nelson attended the S.S. No. 7, Facey’s Public School, and the East Zorra Amish Mennonite Church. In 1952, he married Barbara Roth of Wellesley and they purchased a dairy farm on Berlett’s Road in Wilmot Township. Nelson and Barb had two sons and one daughter. They attended the St. Agatha and Steinmann Mennonite churches. Nelson was a dedicated farmer and in his retirement years he continued growing crops and hauled livestock for David Martin Mennonites.
